I was standing in the rain. The sort of rain that pounds on your head like a tequila hangover. It was dusk, the clouds low and grey, the light fading fast but peppered by camera flashes of Japanese wiping the rain from their eyes.

A large limestone cliff loomed up into the sky about a hundred yards away. Cut away in the cliff was a huge cave, and from that cave a black mist suddenly rushed towards me. It focussed into a swarm of rapidly flying black shapes. For 20 minutes the swarm kept streaming out over me and into the jungle, forming arcs in the air like a chines dragon’s tail. No noise about the rain. 2 million bats out hunting 20 tonnes of insect.
